Chancellor urged to invest in Zero Carbon Humber

Business leaders in the Humber and the TUC are calling on the Chancellor, Rishi Sunak, to use his first budget to commit to investing in the Zero Carbon Humber project.

The project is designed to help the UK take a leading role in developing clean technologies to tackle climate change.

TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady, Northern Powerhouse Partnership director Henri Murison and Humber LEP chairman Lord Haskins of Skidby say in a letter to the Chancellor that time is running out to develop carbon capture and storage projects at scale.

Their letter warns: “To win this race, we must be prepared to invest in new, ambitious opportunities like Zero Carbon Humber.

“Projects like this match the Government’s ambitions both on decarbonisation, and on levelling up regions across the nation. By working alongside the proposed Teesside cluster this opportunity could be maximised further.

“This affects everyone in the country, and together we must make plans to find new solutions and opportunities. Businesses, Government, local authorities and citizens. With the right support, we can all be a part of the transition to a new economy.”

The letter also says that carbon capture and storage technology provides the opportunity to businesses across the Humber to save £27.5bn in carbon taxes by 2040, protect 55,000 existing jobs and support tens of thousands of new jobs.
