Application for 600 homes on former gasworks site approved

A planning application for over 600 homes on a former gasworks site in York has been approved by City of York Council.
York-based developer North Star secured permission for the nine-acre brownfield site, which will also include a neighbourhood park and a community hub.
Out of 607 new homes around 400 will be ‘Build to Rent’ on the site on Heworth Green, at the edge of the city centre.
A North Star spokesman said: “It’s great news that the planning committee has recognised the benefits and approved these plans. We are now able to finally regenerate this large brownfield site and deliver much needed new homes for York, after various stalled attempts on this site.
“These proposals will bring a new Build to Rent concept to the City, create a new publicly accessible neighbourhood park and a community hub that will be at the heart of the masterplan.
“We’ve worked constructively with the council over many months to get to this stage and we will be starting the infrastructure works to clean up the site as soon as possible.
“It’s a major investment to bring this site forward and transform it into a new vibrant new community and we will now work on the specific details of the scheme, following this outline approval.”
Remedial works on the land will start shortly, following the earlier approval of the removal of gas infrastructure works.
Local York enterprise, Social Vision, will run the community hub on the site. It will be available for local groups and charities to use, and will also be designed to be dementia friendly.
