Revamp for historic hall

AN HISTORIC hall in Doncaster is to be given a new lease of life after being bought by a local business couple who plan to transform it into a wedding venue.

Rossington Hall, which has roots going back to 1773, has been acquired as part of the Rossington Estate by Gary and Michelle Gee.

They have big plans to restore the hall and grounds to their original state, including the Victorian stables.

The building has a varied history, the current hall was rebuilt in the 1880s after a fire destroyed the previous building.

The hall has been used as a training college for missionary priests for Africa, and was occupied by an Indian regiment and the Royal Veterinary Corps during World War Two.

It was also a school for children with special needs until its closure in 2008 and has remained unoccupied since.

The couple are property landlords who run Migar Homes in the town.

Mr Gee said he anticipates the total cost of the renovation to reach around £2m.

“We hope that its use as a wedding venue, subject to planning permission, will help secure the building’s future for years to come.

“We expect to be open for weddings in May next year.”

Part of the 255 acre site is let to the Northern Racing College, which trains people for jobs in the horse racing industry.

Work is already underway and the couple are inviting the public to see the progress of the restoration so far by hosting an open day on September 4.
