Construction business slumps into administration

Birstall-based construction company Athena Civil Engineering has gone into administration.

Jamie Miller and Gareth Harris of RSM Restructuring Advisory were appointed joint administrators to the business on 2 June 2020.

The decision to appoint administrators was made by the directors of Athena Civil Engineering following severe cash flow difficulties associated with Coronavirus.

As a result, the company ceased to trade with immediate effect, and its employees have been made redundant.

Athena Haulage and Athena Plant continue to trade as normal.

Miller, one of the joint administrators, said: ‘Unfortunately, Athena Civil Engineering faced challenging financial conditions compounded by significant site closure costs and the prospect of prohibitive reopening costs.

“It is always very sad when an established and respected business has to cease to trade, and very much a reflection of the difficulties faced by the sector and many others at this difficult time for businesses.

“We are working to assist employees with their claims to the Redundancy Payments Service to ensure they receive their entitlements and also to maximise realisations from the company’s contracts and other assets to ensure the return to creditors is optimised wherever possible.

“Creditors, customers and other interested parties will be contacted in due course.”
