Plans revealed for new city centre hotel

York city centre could have a new 188-room hotel, if planners give the go-ahead.

The city’s council has received an application to knock down the former Carpetright store in Layerthorpe and build a large Premier Inn in its place.

Due to the virus outbreak, Premier Inn’s hotels are currently open to key workers only – but customers will be able to book rooms from July 4 onwards.

The plans submitted to the council are for a four-storey building, which would also have parking for 43 cars, including four disabled bays, a drop-off space, six electric car charging bays and 20 cycle spaces.

A detailed statement submitted as part of the application, explains: “The proposed development would provide a new long-term use for the site.

“It will also create a new and improved entrance to the city centre with a high quality bespoke design. The proposed hotel building has been designed using materials that are in keeping with York.

“The scheme will increase choice for visitors and complement the many excellent hotels, already established in the area.

“Benefiting the local economy the proposed hotel will include a bar/restaurant, designed to serve breakfasts and light meals to guests if they would like them.

“Experience from sites in similar locations is that many of our guests like to eat out in local restaurants, cafés and pubs. This additional spending will help to support local businesses in the city.

“The proposed hotel would generate new permanent jobs in a variety of roles.

“All of the new team members will be employed on permanent contracts and will benefit from industry-leading apprenticeships, training and development programmes.”
