Proposals revealed for new budget supermarket

Lidl GB has launched an online public consultation on plans for a new store in Harrogate, ahead of submitting a planning application to Harrogate Borough Council.

The multi-million pound investment will redevelop the site of the former Lookers car dealership on Knaresborough Road. And if it is approved, it will create around 40 new full and part-time jobs for the local economy.

It would have a 13,600 sq ft sales area, an in-store bakery, customer toilets and 94 car parking spaces including disabled, parent & child spaces and rapid electric vehicle charging points.

The public are being invited to comment on the proposals via a dedicated website www.lidl-harrogate.co.uk and through a leaflet which is being delivered to properties in the area.

Lidl’s regional property director, Robert Beaumont, said: “We have been looking forward to bringing a new store to Harrogate for a while and the former Lookers site is a great location.

“We are extremely excited about the prospect of opening our first Lidl in the area and serving our fresh, quality and incredibly good value produce to the local community.

“Our plans are set to create around 40 new positions which would be fantastic for the local community, and we hope that as many people as possible are able to join us for this ‘virtual’ public consultation.”

The new supermarket forms part of the company’s £1.45bn investment in its expansion across Great Britain in 2019 and 2020.
