In Brief: Ornate booked for library contract; Anelay completes at Castle Howard; and more

SPECIALIST plastering firm Ornate Interiors has been booked for one of its biggest projects to date at Liverpool Library.

The Pudsey firm will be carrying out traditional lime plastering and the restoration of decorative plaster mouldings on behalf of main contractors Shepherd Construction and sub contractor William Anelay at the venue which is undergoing a £50m refurbishment.

Liverpool Library forms an integral part of the World Heritage site on William Brown Street in the city and dates back to 1860.

Castle HowardBUILDING, conservation and restoration specialists William Anelay in conjunction with architects Wiles & Maguire has completed work at Castle Howard in North Yorkshire.

The project was carried out in two phases over an 18 month period and involved repairs to wall foundations and fabric, replacements of damaged masonry, extensive re-pointing and the rebuilding of four stray wall towers.

William Anelay’s managing director Vernon Carter said: “We are pleased to have been involved in the restoration and conservation of the estate boundaries. Castle Howard is such a well loved local landmark and deserved to have its stray walls conserved with care.”

THE University of Hull is to host a major international conference next year.

The 18th International Sustainable Development Research Conference on June 24 – 26 is expected to attract 350 visitors to the city from more than 40 countries.

The university won a competitive bid to hold the conference on behalf of the International Sustainable Development Research Society (ISDRS), which aims to communicate the importance of sustainable development in a global economy.

The society is a coalition of academic researchers, teachers, government, non-governmental organisations and industry.

The conference, held in Hong Kong in 2010 and New York this year, will be jointly run by the University’s Department of Geography and the Centre for Adaptive Science and Sustainability (CASS).

ENGINEERING experts from Leeds-based management and technical consultancy WYG are ensuring work is up to par on a multi-million pound residential development in Cambridgeshire.

WYG is one of four consultants to be appointed by the Cambridgeshire Partnerships Limited (CPL) on the four-year framework which is part of a wider vision for the area spanning over 25 years to build 16,000 homes.

WYG’s experts will be on hand to provide specialist advice on building services, design, sustainability and other areas that need to meet specific building regulation requirements.

Cambridgeshire Partnerships were appointed by the Homes & Communities Agency (HCA) with the aim of establishing a step change in the delivery of affordable housing on three new major development sites in Cambridgeshire by 2012.

Jon Cornforth, health, safety and environment manager, took home the Health and Safety Professional of the Year accolade at the GLASS Charter Awards, while Tim Barnes was highly commended in the Health & Safety Director of the Year category.
 
HR manager Kaye Stevens was also highly commended for Solaglas Installation’s health initiative which saw the introduction of a drug and alcohol policy.
 
The success of the programme led to Solaglas Installation being approached by the British Police Federation, which has asked the company to present the details of the programme to their teams.
 
The awards aim to recognise and reward organisations and individuals who make exceptional efforts or contributions to improve health and safety practices and performance.
