Storage and distribution facility could create 1,500 jobs

Construction services company ISG Retail Limited (Bristol) is developing proposals for a major storage and distribution warehouse facility which could lead to 1,500 more jobs in West Yorkshire.

It has opened a public consultation on its plans in advance of a full planning application expected next month.

The company’s proposals for the warehouse relate to land between Whitehall Road, Whitechapel Road and the M62 to the east of Scholes village, near Cleckheaton.

If built, the property would comprise a ground floor plus three and a half upper floors, bringing the total warehouse area to nearly 2.9m sq ft.

A spokesman for ISG Retail explained: “The location has been chosen for the excellent road links to the Junction 26 ‘Chain Bar Interchange’ of the M62 and M606.

“The proposed facility is being designed to meet the requirements of today’s international operators.

“The development site covers 23.7 hectares (58.5 acres) of land which has been allocated as a future development site for employment in the Kirklees Local Plan. The land is currently in agricultural use.”

“A distribution and storage warehouse facility of this type and size would create employment for in the region of 1,500 staff.

“The facility would create a wide range of job opportunities across a number of professions such as engineering, IT professionals, robotics, general management, HR and team members to manage customer orders.

“Catering and support staff, cleaners, landscape gardeners and security personnel would also be required.

“At least 800 jobs would be created during the construction and fit out stages of the project.”
