The role of SMEs in the new economy

During the recent In The Circle sustainability conference, Catherine Westoby, the net zero business engagement lead for the Clean Growth Directorate at the Department for Business Energy and Industrial Strategy presented on the role of SMEs.

During her talk she spoke about her work to encourage mass mobilisation of small businesses to sign up for the Race to Zero – a global campaign to rally climate leadership from businesses, regions, universities and investors.

She explained that the opportunities for small businesses are massive and how through its programme of activity the Government is asking all businesses to commit to cutting their carbon emissions by 50% by 2030 and become climate leaders

In order to support the transition of businesses, BEIS has developed its UK Business Climate Hub which aims to provide leaders with the tools to help them understand their business emissions, how to tackle them, and how to share their work in this area with customers and the community.
