Victorian villa to accommodate apartments for older residents

Planning permission has been granted to bring a new lease of life to a grand villa in York and transform it into a new senior living community.

Beverley House, on Shipton Road, will be restored and brought back into use by developer Inglehurst Property which bought the site from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation.

The plans include a total of 21 apartments, through the conversion of the existing Beverley House and new build elements within the site, adjacent to Homestead Park.

Built in the late 19th century as a large family house, Beverley House was last used as offices by the Local Government Ombudsman. Previously it had been a Rowntree Trust building but has been unoccupied since 2015.

Matthew Newton, from Inglehurst Property, said: “Gaining planning permission is a major landmark to bring this grand Victorian villa back to life and create a vibrant new community for older people.

“We will restore the former grandeur of the property by removing the unsympathetic extensions, and restore the original features of the majestic property.”

York-based architects Vincent &Brown worked on the plans, which were amended following feedback from the council and stakeholders.
