Essential hospital facility improvements completed at NHS trust

Morgan Sindall Construction has delivered vital improvements to an operating theatre at Scunthorpe General Hospital.

The refurbishment of Theatre E at the hospital, operated by Northern Lincolnshire and Goole Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, involved an 18-week programme that saw a range of improvements to the facility, which is used for a wide range of operations.

It included a complete strip out of existing fixtures and fittings as well as mechanical and electrical and rooftop plant equipment, which was subsequently replaced with an entirely new operating theatre.

The renovated facility incorporates new internal walling and an ultraclean ventilation canopy attached to the theatre ceiling, as well as new ancillary areas featuring scrub, sterile and anaesthetic rooms with accompanying safety and mechanical and electrical upgrades.

Running alongside the main theatre works, Morgan Sindall Construction also managed the formation and upgrading of the medical air plantroom.

This included the installation of structural steelwork supports for the supply air ductwork, together with compressors, receivers, air dryers and manifolds.

The project was the latest stage of Morgan Sindall Construction Yorkshire and North East’s work in helping to create enhanced facilities for the NHS.

Since 2020, the team has delivered essential improvement works to key facilities within Doncaster and Bassetlaw Teaching Hospitals (DBTH) Foundation Trust’s hospitals, from ensuring wards were Covid-secure to installing new medical gas pipework.

Richard Bowmer, project manager for Morgan Sindall Construction, said: “It was a privilege to support the Trust in their work renovating Theatre E.

“Our team had to address the complications that are always encountered when working on a live hospital site, but through teamwork we were able to complete this work on schedule.

“As with our work in Doncaster, it’s a real honour to help support the NHS by creating the right environment for its brilliant staff to provide the care that patients require.”

Christopher Graygoose, theatre manager, Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust, said: “As an NHS operating theatre manager involved with the modern extensive refurbishment of a 30-year-old operating theatre, you really have to have faith with the building contractors chosen.

“This wasn’t going to be an easy project without the odd unexpected issue. However, these were dealt with quickly by Morgan Sindall Construction in order to meet the challenging timescales during pandemic conditions.

“The refurbishment within the department was so smooth, it enabled our trust to continue to offer its full operating service without any disruptions.”
