Green light for mixed use commercial scheme on derelict land

A variety of commercial properties will be developed on a mostly vacant site near Hillsborough Stadium, in Sheffield.

The plans for land at the junction With Herries Road, Herries Road South And Penistone Road were approved by members of Sheffield City Council’s Planning and Highways Committee.

They accepted proposals for an Aldi food store, a gym, two builders’ merchants, two storage and distribution units, a vehicle maintenance and repair unit and two drive through restaurants.

There will also be 14 electric vehicle charging points, with capacity for additional chargers as demand increases.

Planning officers had previously recommended approval for this latest application by Jaguar Estates, pointing out this was an unsightly, largely vacant site with good accessibility.

Councillors were told the same site had already secured approval for a similar scheme in January last year, but that this resubmission had decreased the number of proposed commercial units from 14 to nine.

As well as Aldi, other tenants who have so far signed up for space at the scheme include Costa Coffee, Travis Perkins, Taco Bell, Formula One Auto Centres, Firehouse Fitness Gym and Selco Builders Warehouse.

Councillors overwhelmingly voted in favour of the latest plans, agreeing they would bring an ugly brownfield area back into use.

Work on the site is due to begin in November this year, with construction expected to take 12 to 13 months.
