Medical distribution centre completes, creating another 100 jobs

Construction has completed on a major medical distribution centre at Wakefield Hub, with 100 new jobs to be created at the site.

The 260,000 sq ft building for PHOENIX Group will serve the NHS and pharmacies across the UK, further boosting the 250 million packs of medication the company delivers each year.

A joint venture partnership between developers, HBD and Yorkcourt, Wakefield Hub is one of the largest regeneration projects of its kind in the North of England.

The 200-acre development has already attracted significant inward investment.

Jackie Jones, director of supply chain at PHOENIX, said: “This is a first for PHOENIX. We have never developed a purpose-built distribution site and it’s an incredibly exciting time.

“Over the last few years PHOENIX have seen double digit growth and our new Wakefield site gives an enormous opportunity for growth as well as driving job opportunities for Wakefield and the locality.”

Tom Wheldon, director and head of region at HBD, said: “We’re pleased to be able to welcome PHOENIX Group to Wakefield Hub – its new purpose-built base coupled with unrivalled access to the motorway network will no doubt prove a successful new location as it targets further growth.”

Scott Mackie, director at Yorkcourt, added: PHOENIX is an excellent addition to Wakefield Hub and their choice to open here, along with the successful forward funding agreement with clients of Abrdn, is not only a vote of confidence in the scheme but in the region as a place to invest. It’s very positive news for the city.”

Built by contractor GMI Construction on behalf of the JV, the energy efficient new building includes solar PV panels and 46 electric car charging bays.
