Green light for multi-million pound racecourse improvement programme

Councillors have approved £5m plans to redevelop part of York Racecourse to create extra seating, bars, betting facilities and food stands.
The scheme, which was passed unanimously by City of York Council’s planning committee, will see the section south of the Knavesmire Stand upgraded. It is expected the work will be completed in time for the 2024 racing season.
Two new lawns under a high canopy will also be created and the 1913 Bustardthorpe Stand improved.
The racecourse owners said the plans aim to offer a better experience for visitors to that end of the course.
Proposals include replacing a single-storey extension behind the Bustardthorpe Stand with a new building, upgrading the area’s toilets and refurbishing the entrance.
William Derby, chief executive and clerk of the course, said: “This latest chapter aims to improve the facilities for racegoers in the Grandstand and Paddock area, following similar recent investments elsewhere.
“As a summer venue, we want to provide lawns to enjoy, however we are mindful of the Yorkshire weather so we are looking to repeat the success of the canopy that sits above the John Carr Terrace.
“Practical concerns around a better arrival experience, more toilets and easier access to both food and drinks and how we better support our raceday team, all form part of this ambitious scheme.”
York Racecourse is one of the oldest racecourses in the world with racing first starting on the Knavesmire in 1731.
