Sheffield’s brightest young accountants honoured

ROSIE Barker, from Grant Thornton, has been named the Sheffield Young Accountant of the Year.

The announcement was made at the Sheffield & District Chartered Accountants Student Society Annual Dinner, which was held at Baldwins Omega.

The awards, which were sponsored by financial recruitment specialists Sphere Group, honoured the best young accounting talent in the South Yorkshire city.

Runners up were Mark Foster and Rebecca Johnstone, both of PKF, Safeena Ali, of Hawsons, and Hester Ganthony, of PricewaterhouseCoopers.

Geoff Blackwell-Frier, managing director of Sphere Group, said: “As a consultancy which prides itself on providing clients with the highest calibre candidates, it is a great pleasure to be able to sponsor an event which promotes outstanding achievement. This year's Young Accountant Awards in Sheffield, and the evening itself, more than lived up to our expectations.”

Paul Houghton, audit partner at Grant Thornton in Sheffield, said the professional services firm was delighted with Rosie's success.

He said: “It's great recognition for her excellent contribution to our Sheffield audit team and a superb win for the firm. We're very proud of her.”

Rosie, who was educated in Hong Kong and then achieved a first class Business Studies degree from the University of Sheffield, said that receiving the award was a great honour, given the quality of the other nominations.

The competition celebrates the achievements of young chartered accountants who are judged on professionalism, both in and out of the office, work competence and overall personality.
