Administration looms for independent craft brewery

A Leeds-based brewery which unveiled a new multi-million pound home in North Leeds in 2020 has filed a Notice of Intention to appoint an administrator.

North Brewing Company Ltd, of Springwell Works, Buslingthorpe Lane, Leeds, has been trading since 1997.

According to its full accounts made up to 31 March 2022, the business employed an average of 40 people in 2022, up from 24 staff the previous year.

The same set of accounts show the firm owed creditors over £2.7m, but it struck an optimistic note in the face of the pandemic’s aftermath, stating: “We are currently expanding our brewing capacity at Springwell and have opened our Tap Room to huge acclaim.

“We look forward to the continued re-emergence of the on-trade and export sectors and expect sales to increase year-on-year.”

In 2020 the company revealed it had established its base at Springwell inside a 21,000 sq ft former tannery.

The move to this property meant the brewery could double its capacity, open a new 500-person taproom, and locate its bar and HQ under one roof.

The business secured a Business Growth Programme Fund from the West Yorkshire Combined Authority to support the project.

Company co-founder, John Gyngell, said he and his colleagues were inspired by beer producers in the USA, which have created destination taprooms at their breweries.
