Plans to re-open airport edge forwards after key vote

Doncaster-Sheffield Airport (DSA) has moved closer to being reopened, after plans to go ahead with an outline business case for the move were accepted.

South Yorkshire Combined Authority’s board has today – 13 February – unanimously agreed to initial proposals which would see £138m of public cash made available to fund the reopening.

Another vote will take place in the summer to agree the release of the funding.

The combined authority will now progress towards considering a full business case for the airport’s reopening.

South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said the vote was: “a big and important step on the journey to getting our airport open again, and developing a world-leading sustainable aviation and manufacturing hub at Gateway East”.

He said if the airport is reopened, it would generate a jobs and investment boost for the area.

Mayor of Doncaster, Ros Jones, Mayor of Doncaster, said the combined authority board’s vote was “positive news”.

She added: “The economic potential of a reopened airport cannot be understated for Doncaster, South Yorkshire and the North.

“Alongside Gateway East, it could prove to be an anchor for other related industries, helping to put us at the forefront of green aviation and related technologies.”

City of Doncaster Council said it hopes to negotiate a lease with Peel Group, the owner of the Doncaster Sheffield Airport site. Once this is done, an operator should be appointed later this year.
