Short break specialist adds another resort hotel to its portfolio

Leeds-based Caledonian Leisure, which operates under the Caledonian Travel and UKBreakaways brands, has completed its purchase of the New Southlands Hotel, in Scarborough.

The 55-bedroom hotel, soon to be renamed The Caledonian New Southlands Hotel, becomes the fourth hotel to join The Caledonian Hotel Collection.

It follows the acquisition of the Caledonian Claymore Hotel in Arrochar last year and, more recently, the Caledonian Tower in Blackpool (formerly known as the Liberty’s) and the Caledonian Torbay in Torquay.

Graham Rogers, managing director at Caledonian Leisure, said: “The Caledonian New Southlands Hotel in Scarborough is the perfect addition to The Caledonian Hotel Collection as we continue to expand our portfolio of hotels in key UK destinations.

“The hotel is renowned for providing excellent accommodation and a warm Yorkshire hospitality delivered by a friendly team who share our customer first ethos.

“Scarborough remains one of the UK’s top holiday destinations and one of our best-selling resorts, with customer numbers increasing year on year across our brands.

“We look forward to offering a variety of packages to the Caledonian New Southlands Hotel through both our own brand channels, digital platforms and established network of travel agents.”

Following the acquisition, the hotel’s general manager, Ruth Janicki and entire team, will join the Caledonian Leisure family.

Janicki said: “We can’t wait to start to make memories for both new and repeat customers. Sharing the values of ‘customer first’ with the whole team at Caledonian will ensure we keep delivering exceptional stays in this stunning resort.”

Law firm Schofield Sweeney acted as lead buy-side adviser to Caledonian Leisure. Its team included partner Dan Bisby, Alex Aitken, Liam Murphy (Corporate), Tom Jackson, Jessica Townend (Property) and Annie Gray (Employment).

Bisby said: “We are happy to have once again supported Graham, David and the rest of the Caledonian team on a further portfolio acquisition.”

The latest acquisition comes on the back of Caledonian Leisure recording an annual turnover of over £55m for 2023, a 40% increase on the previous year.
