Prosecution launched against waste business following death of worker

A waste management business will be prosecuted over the death of a worker involved in a collision with a bin lorry at its site in Bradford.

The man died following the incident at Biffa Transfer Station, Peace Street, on 10 August 2023.

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) confirmed a prosecution had begun, with the firm accused of breaching health and safety regulations.

A spokesman for Biffa Waste Services told the BBC: “Our thoughts remain with the family and friends of the deceased. We continue to cooperate with the HSE and it would not be appropriate to comment further at this stage.”

A HSE spokesman said: “HSE has commenced a prosecution against Biffa Waste Services Ltd following an investigation into the death of a worker at its transfer station in Bradford.

“The company is accused of breaching Regulations 3(1)(a), 3(1)(b) and 5(1) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999.

“A date for the first hearing will be confirmed in due course.”
