Major investment unveiled for two city sports and leisure centres

Sheffield City Council has confirmed redevelopment work will begin next year on both Springs and Concord Leisure Centres, making them the first facilities to be rebuilt under the city’s Sport and Leisure Strategy.

It says the investment aims to create modern, welcoming, and accessible spaces for all.

New facilities at Springs and Concord will include upgraded amenities designed to support fitness, wellness, and community engagement. Redevelopment is due to start in late 2026.

Councillor Kurtis Crossland, chair of the Communities, Parks and Leisure Committee at Sheffield City Council, said: “This is a significant investment in the health and wellbeing of our residents.

“The new leisure centres will ensure that everyone, regardless of ability or background, has access to top-quality fitness and wellbeing facilities.

“We are committed to making Sheffield a healthier, more active city, and these redevelopments are a major step forward.”

In January, leisure operator, Everyone Active took over operation of both leisure centres, along with eight other facilities in the city, including Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, the English Institute of Sport Sheffield and iceSheffield.

Lorenzo Clark, partnership manager at Everyone Active, added: “This fantastic redevelopment project is hugely exciting for Sheffield and will ensure more state-of-the-art leisure facilities are available to local communities.

“The investment will help us to better support the health and wellbeing of residents through amazing activities and services and we look forward to working with the Council to bring this vision to life.”

The redevelopment aims to transform Springs and Concord Leisure Centres into hubs which not only support physical activity but also integrate healthcare and community services under one roof.

Rather than refurbishing the aging facilities, rebuilding Springs and Concord Leisure Centres has been identified as the most cost-effective and future-proofed solution.

By constructing the new centres on adjacent land, the council says current facilities will remain operational throughout the build, ensuring minimal disruption.

Enhanced provision will include:

  • Modern health and fitness gyms
  • Six-lane, 25m main swimming pools and teaching pools
  • Five-court sports hall (Springs)
  • Ten-court sports hall (Concord)
  • Wellbeing spas and health suites
  • Multiple studio spaces for group fitness classes
  • Soft play facilities for families
  • Modern cafés and social spaces
  • Wet and dry changing facilities

Other amenities are also being considered, including a new indoor bowls hall at Springs Leisure Centre and co-location spaces which will offer services such as locally-based NHS provision, healthy weight support, smoking cessation programmes and physical rehab.
