Jobs saved in care homes deal

MARIA Mallaband Care Group has struck a deal which will safeguard 2,250 jobs at 35 care homes at risk of closure.

The Leeds-based company has taken over the care homes from Southern Cross which fell into difficulties over the summer and announced plans to close.

Maria Mallaband already operates 28 luxury care homes in the UK and is launching a new company, Countrywide Care Homes, to run the new additions to its portfolio.

Philip Burgan, chairman and chief executive of MMCG, said: “We have grown quickly through word of mouth by delivering first class care in a five star hotel environment.

“The Southern Cross deal moves us into a new sector and our excellent staff will be working hard to impose the same high standards on the homes we are acquiring.

“I believe Countrywide Care Homes will be a valuable addition to the group.”

In addition to its care home operations, MMCG runs services for people with autism and learning difficulties. The company has 111 properties overall and employs 4,000 staff.
