The Legal 500: Leading recovery experts revealed

WALKER Morris and DLA Piper are the top Yorkshire firms for insolvency and corporate recovery, according to The Legal 500.

The legal bible highlights DLA Piper’s work on a complex debt-for-equity and pension restructuring for Dyson and describes Walker Morris as a “top performer”.

Addleshaw Goddard, Eversheds and Pinsent Masons are identified as the second tier firms in the sector with Clarion, Cobbetts and Squire Sanders Hammonds in the third rank.

William Ballman, of Cobbetts, and Philip Mudd, of Walker Morris, are named as the leading figures in insolvency and corporate recovery in the region.

Jim McAuley RBS Royal Bank of ScotlandRBS regional director Jim McAuley (pictured) said: “A tale of two markets almost. Due to the muted corporate finance market and subdued levels of employment from banks and other funders in deal activity, fees have been harder to generate and sustain.

“On the insolvency and restructuring angle this market reflects the current economic environment. Whilst insolvency numbers have thankfully not been what some had feared, restructuring work has continued to be a growing income earner in the business and corporate marketplaces.”

In banking and finance, The Legal 500 points to Addleshaw Goddard’s work advising KCOM on its £200m facilities, and DLA Piper’s advice on the funding of the secondary buyout of Allied Glass Holdings as examples of why they are the tier one firms in the sector. DLA Piper’s Sarah Day is its leading individual.

Eversheds, Pinsent Masons, Squire Sanders Hammonds and Walker Morris are placed in the second tier with Cobbetts and Nabarro in the third.

Yorkshire boasts three tier one firms in the complex area that is the private finance initiative.

DLA Piper is said to have “strong credentials” in transport, Pinsent Masons has recently acted on a multi-site project for West Yorkshire Police while Addleshaw Goddard boasts clients including Skanska and John Laing.

Beachcroft, Eversheds, Nabarro and Walker Morris are the second tier PFI firms with Andrew Jackson, Hempsons and Schofield Sweeney in the third tier.
