New urban village for Doncaster

PLANS for a new village which will regenerate a South Yorkshire community have been given the go-ahead.

The £30m project will see Doncaster-based development company Urban-i rebuild the old community of Kirk Sandall.

Urban i's scheme, on a redundant brownfield site on the edge of the new settlement of Kirk Sandall, will place the historic 10th century St Oswald's Church at the heart of the community.

The project, given the go-ahead by Doncaster Council, will see a new village green and square, designed to provide a focal point for weddings and other social occasions.

There will also be a community centre, a children's nursery, shops and offices.

The urban village will be supported and sustained by 114 new homes, plus live/work units.

Darryl Barker, director of Urban i, said today the development will bring new jobs and business opportunities to the community.

He said: “We are delighted the planners share our vision to bring redundant land back into positive community use and greatly enhance the quality of life in the village. This is a major, long-term project, which will create hundreds of jobs during the three year construction programme. This project again emphasises our belief in the future of Doncaster and the surrounding area. It will be a quality development that will create real homes and a sense of true community.”

Urban i and the company's architects on the scheme, Self Architects, worked closely with Doncaster Council's planning officers in creating the regeneration blueprint for the site and ensuring any concerns over the environment were met and overcome.

Kirk Sandall will consist of 24 houses, 90 flats, 15 live/work units, 19 business offices, three shops, a children's day nursery, an outside play area and a two store community building.
