Open air theatre set for summer re-opening

SCARBOROUGH’S Open Air Theatre is set for a summer re-opening with a star line-up of opera singers.
Scarborough Borough Council has invested £3.5m to restore the theatre to its former glory, which will be the largest open air theatre in Europe.
Jose Carreras and Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, joined by the Opera North Orchestra, will star at the opening event on July 23.
The attractions continue on July 31 with an 80’s Rewind Festival including pop legends Paul Young, Kid Creole & the Coconuts and Boy George.
David Heartfield, promoter for the show, said: “We are delighted with the initial response – already gold circle tickets are sold out.”
Details about other major events throughout the summer will follow shortly, including plans for a July ‘World of Sport’ shown on huge LED screens including the World Cup, Wimbledon and F1 Racing.
The Open Air Theatre aims to be the catalyst for the resort’s continuing regeneration. It is anticipated that audiences for the 6,500 seater will have a major economic impact on the local economy by attracting more visitors to Scarborough and encouraging people to extend their stay.
The investment is part of Scarborough Borough Council’s strategic development of The Sands scheme to improve the resort’s infrastructure and to build on its reputation as a major holiday destination.
Paul Gregg, chairman of Apollo Resorts and Leisure, said: “We are delighted that progress on the Open Air Theatre regeneration is on schedule to open this summer, thanks to a £3.5m investment by Scarborough Borough Council to restore the theatre to its former glory as one of Europe’s most beautiful theatre settings.”
Jim Dillon, Scarborough Borough’s Council’s chief executive, said: “It is fantastic that we are now living the dream of bringing Scarborough’s Open Air Theatre back to life, and it is another fine example of the town’s ability to deliver success on a grand scale. I believe that the theatre will have a significant impact on both tourism and the economic well-being of the whole of our borough. It will be a unique facility and really put Scarborough on the national and international map.”
