Historic house to be restored by one of UK’s oldest firms

YORK-based building conservation and restoration specialists William Anelay has been awarded the contract to carry out phases of restoration work at Althorp House.

The project, due to last 54 weeks, will involve a programme of re-roofing, stonework replacements and extensive refurbishment of the mathematical tiles which face much of the house.

Althorp House is set within a country estate of 14,000 acres in Northamptonshire and has been the ancestral home of the Spencer family since the early 16th century.

The house was originally a red brick Tudor building but its appearance was radically altered in the 18th century when the famous architect Henry Holland was commissioned to make extensive changes.

William Anelay’s managing director Vernon Carter said: “We are proud to be involved in safeguarding such a magnificent grade I listed building. The external fabric repairs will preserve Althorp House for many generations to come.”

Established in 1747, William Anelay is one of the oldest companies in the UK and currently operates out of bases in York and Manchester with 100 employees and a sales turnover in 2008/09 of £17m.

They are one of the UK’s few dedicated building restoration firms and have worked on many prestigious commercial and private residential projects across Britain and Europe.
