Entrepreneurship in Yorkshire: Why start a business?

DRIVE, passion and belief are just some of the ingredients that go into making a successful entrepreneur.

The characteristics of entrepreneurs and the motivations for starting a new venture are explored in a new supplement from TheBusinessDesk.com in partnership with Barclays Wealth and Deloitte.

Both those that have made a success of their own businesses and their advisers agree that accumulation of wealth was rarely the primary driver for entrepreneurs launching firms.

Ian Sanderson, managing director of construction, fit-out and refurbishment company Sanderson, said: “Anyone can start a business –- it’s very simple – but to
build and grow it [is the challenge].

“The people around this table aren’t happy with just being in business, they want to grow it and push themselves to do better.”

While starting a new enterprise is often seen as a daunting challenge, entrepreneurs agree that once they have started a business it can prove very difficult to do anything else.

Kevin Hollinrake, managing director of Hunters, said: “You never stop being an entrepreneur. I heard someone say that they started a business to stop working but actually the reverse is true… I do get excited about doing the work.”
