Building Briefs: Clugston starts at Baths Hall; New MD for Wellington Place; and more

BUILDING contractor Clugston Construction, based in Leeds and Scunthorpe, has started work on a new multi-use entertainment venue, The Baths Hall, in Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire.

The project, which will retain the original façade of the historical building, will result in between 60 and 70 people a week working on the site, rising to 130 during key phases.

The Baths Hall will provide a modern, multi-use venue capable of hosting live performances and events, top class entertainment, conferencing and wider community use for up to 2,000 people.

When completed in summer 2011, the building will include state of the art sound and lighting systems, bars, a café and conference facilities.

COMMERCIAL property developer MEPC has appointed Andrew Barlow as the managing director of its Wellington Place scheme.

Mr Barlow’s appointment will support the estate’s growth programme and upon lettings to RSM Bentley Jennison, Irwin Mitchell and Regus.

Mr Barlow has more than 15 years experience in the marketing and property sectors and joins from Hermes Real Estate. He will be responsible for Wellington Place, Granta Park near Cambridge and new business activity at MEPC.

Rick de Blaby, Chief Executive, said: “I am delighted that Andrew Barlow is taking senior management responsibility within MEPC, he is ideally suited to the challenge of the future developments at Wellington Place.”

THE only speculative office scheme in Leeds to get underway this year – 10 South Parade – has secured its first letting.

Xafinity Consulting, the employee benefits and pensions services provider, which was previously located at 9 South Parade, has signed a lease to take 8,200 sq ft of office space in the new Wilton Developments scheme for its regional headquarters.

10 South Parade is a 36,000 sq ft office development that is undergoing an extensive refurbishment, re-build and revitalisation programme which will result in Leeds’ first Grade A+ city centre office scheme to come to market when complete summer 2010.

David Emptage, director of Xafinity Consulting, said: “The accommodation in our new office will benefit both our staff and clients. 

“We looked at other Grade A office space elsewhere in Leeds city centre, but believe the finished article here will be exactly what we and our clients need.”

THE industrial agency team at CB Richard Ellis in Leeds has completed three new deals in the Wakefield area totalling 70,000 ft.

Acting on behalf of Covidien, CBRE has sold the freehold interest in a 30,268sq ft warehouse on California Drive in Castleford to pump manufacturer and supplier, Verder. 

At Roundwood Industrial Estate in Wakefield, where CBRE acts on behalf of Millfield Estates, the team has leased 21,791 sq ft to Horizon Platforms and a further 17,000 sq ft to Global Doors.

Dave Cato, associate director of industrial agency for CBRE, said: “These recent deals are evidence of the increasing confidence we are witnessing in the industrial market. Enquiry levels are currently good and with landlords offering flexibility and competitive rents, there are definitely deals to be done.”
