Double win for Yorkshire.com

WELCOME to Yorkshire’s website Yorkshire.com was the only winner of two awards at the TravelMole Web awards in London.

The website defended the award it won last year for Best Tourism Website and also picked the award for Best Use of Video.

It narrowly lost out in the Best Use of Mobile Technology category.

Gary Verity, chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “Yorkshire was the biggest winner at these prestigious travel awards and it goes to show that people across the country, as well as across the world, are taking notice of what we are doing.

“Yorkshire.com is setting new standards in the travel industry while Yorkshire itself is exceeding the expectations of those who come to holiday here. We plan to continue improving what we do on both fronts and ensure Yorkshire continues to win prestigious awards like these.”

Graham McKenzie, founder of TravelMole, said: “Welcome to Yorkshire and Yorkshire.com can be proud to be the only double winners on the evening against very tough opposition. The people of Yorkshire can be very proud of the website that represents them so superbly.”

Since it launched in April 2009, visits to the site topped 2.3m last year and are already over 2m a year to date.

May 2010 saw Yorkshire.com record its highest ever traffic figures for a single month and the value of online bookings made through Yorkshire.com is up 73% over the financial year March 2009 – April 2010 compared to the same period the previous year.

The TravelMole awards are voted for by its subscribers and judged by an independent panel of travel and tourism experts.

TravelMole is the largest global online community for the travel and tourism industry with more than 450,000 registered newswire subscribers from travel and tourism professionals worldwide, as well as 30m consumers in 132 countries.

Welcome to Yorkshire has won a number of awards since its launch.

Most recently it won the People’s Choice award at the Chelsea Flower Show for its Rhubarb Crumble and Custard Garden and it also scooped the International Business Forum’s Most Innovative Marketing Campaign Award 2009 for ‘A Long Weekend in Yorkshire Isn’t Long Enough’.

Later this year, Welcome to Yorkshire is also nominated for Europe’s leading marketing campaign in the World Travel Awards.
