Jobs saved and lost at La Senza

JOBS have been saved and lost in Yorkshire following the sale of part of the lingerie group La Senza.

Three La Senza stores in Castleford, Harrogate and Wakefield have closed with the loss of 36 jobs.

A further five stores in Yorkshire – in Leeds city centre, the White Rose Shopping Centre, York, Hull and Meadowhall – have been sold as part of a deal to Alshaya UK. The stores employ 97 staff.

La Senza UK was yesterday placed in administration before parts of the business were sold to Alshaya UK, which is part of the Alshaya group of companies based in Kuwait.

Alshaya have acquired 60 of La Senza UK’s stores, securing around 1,100 jobs in the UK.

La Senza UK confirmed that it was commencing a programme of 81 store closures on December 30.  These stores do not form part of the sale to Alshaya, and have ceased trading with immediate effect.

The closure of a total of 84 stores and 18 concessions has resulted in approximately 1,300 job losses.

Richard Fleming, joint administrator and UK Head of Restructuring at KPMG, said: “We are delighted that we have been able to rescue part of La Senza UK and such a large number of jobs, given the negative economic pressures faced by retailers in the UK.”
