Sheffield misses out on culture city bid

CITY leaders in Sheffield have vowed that the city will bounce back after it lost out in its bid to become the first ever UK City of Culture.

The City of Culture title was expected to bring significant economic benefits to Sheffield but the Department for Culture, Media and Sport yesterday awarded the title to Derry in Northern Ireland.

Coun Paul Scriven, leader of Sheffield City Council, said: “I believe that Sheffield presented a fantastic case to the independent decision panel and DCMS. I am very proud of the city for coming this far.

“To beat off 29 other bidders to make the final 4 shortlist has been a fantastic achievement in itself. I’d also like to pay tribute to Sheffielders who have given us their support as well as the cultural community for their unstinting belief in the city.

“It’s hard to hide our disappointment at not being chosen, however we can congratulate the team who pulled the bid together and offer our thanks to everyone who has contributed and shown their support.”
