Augean recovers from slow start

WASTE experts Augean has seen volumes rise after a difficult start to the year and appointed a new non-executive director.

The company admitted it had suffered as winter weather made it difficult to move waste but revealed that it had put more than 95,000 tonnes in landfill sites in the first six months of 2010 compared to just over 87,000 tonnes last year.

Augean also indicated its determination to win its appeal against the refusal of planning permission for a low level waste site in Northamptonshire which is due to be heard in October.

The company announced the appointment of former FCC UK chief executive Jim Meredith to the board as a non-executive director.

Augean chief executive Paul Blackler said: “After a slow start to 2010, the momentum in the first half has been encouraging.  This coupled with our focus on cost discipline has added a level of confidence we can attribute to the future growth prospects of the business as our markets recover.

“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Jim who will bring a wealth of experience to the board both in developing our business and supporting the team drawing on his significant knowledge of our sector.”

In his former role Mr Meredith was in charge of the UK asset base of internationals services group FCC with revenues of £700m and 2,400 employees.

Looking ahead the company hopes to benefit from the removal of tax exemptions on contaminated land which, it said, was fuelling a steady increase in projects for the firm.

Augean Plc, one of the UK’s leading hazardous waste businesses, is pleased to update the market prior to going into its closed period after the first half year of trading in 2010.
