Historic challenge for architects

A YORKSHIRE architect has led the multi-million pound refurbishment of a world heritage site.

Durham Castle, a grade I listed building dating back to Norman times, has undergone a £3.2m overhaul supervised by Harrogate-based GSSArchitecture.

The building is part of Durham University and the home of University College, housing around 100 students.

Partner Jonathan Hunter said: “The project included undertaking sensitive alterations and the remodelling of student accommodation.

“This included all 34 bedrooms in the castle keep and provided new en-suite facilities to the majority of the rooms.”

The renovations included refurbishment of the 14th Century Great Hall and the kitchen.

GSSArchitecture has previously supervised work at Rockingham Castle, in the Midlands.
