Balfour Beatty wins £34m Yorkshire contract

INFRASTRUCTURE firm Balfour Beatty has secured a £34m contract to build a new waste treatment plant in Yorkshire.

The facility will treat waste from Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham before it is used to generate electricity.

Balfour Beatty announced the deal this morning alongside a separate contract for a new waste treatment facility in Essex.

Chief Executive Ian Tyler said: “These two projects, combined with our recent preferred bidder status for the Gloucestershire Residual Waste Project, strengthen our position in the growing waste sector in the UK.

“They demonstrate the flexibility of our investment business model as well as our ability to harness the skills within the Group to take advantage of opportunities in growth sectors.”

The new facility in Yorkshire is being built for Shanks Waste Management which has signed 25 year £77.4m PFI contract with Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham Councils.

The waste will be used to fuel a new £300m power plant at Ferrybridge.
