THE demise of the park could sound the death knell for inward investment, according to Amsterdam’s city builder.

At the Construction Industry Council Yorkshire and Humber (CIC) and Royal Institute of British Architects Yorkshire (RIBA) annual conference, which is being held in York on June 21, Ruwan Aluvihare will warn the region’s construction industry professionals to ignore green space at their peril when it comes to attracting inward investment.

Mr Aluvihare, who, among other projects, led the redevelopment of 18,000 homes on the outskirts of Amsterdam, has a keen interest in the role of green space in attracting inward investment to European cities.

He said: “Amsterdam currently has 30 parks and four beaches. A recent study has shown that parks are being used significantly more today than they were ten years ago, and the health and wellbeing benefits of open and accessible green space are being linked to decisions by businesses to select city centre locations.

“In the UK, you have to fight to include green space within city centre schemes – not to mention funding it.  In Amsterdam, green areas take priority and for every new dwelling, 12 m sq of green space is automatically allocated.”
