The Green Economy: Green or growth is false choice

LEADING business voices insist there is no contradiction between measures to confront climate change and economic growth.

As the recovery of the UK economy falters in the face of both domestic and international pressures there have been growing calls for the Goverment to delay environmental measures in order to make economic growth a priority..

But this in turn has raised fears that the UK could miss out on the opportunity to be a world leader in green technology.

“The so-called “choice”” between going green or going for growth is a false one. We are increasingly hearing that politicians are for one or the other, when in reality, with the right policies in place, green business will be a major pillar of our future growth,” says CBI director-general John Cridland.

“”Get our energy and climate change policies right, and we can add £20bn extra to our economy and knock £0.8bn off the trade gap, all within the lifetime of this parliament.””

The opportunities for business from the green agenda are considered in more detail in a new free supplement from TheBusinessDesk.com in partnership with DLA Piper available to download here.

Around the county there is already evidence of the private sector offering solutions to environmental challenges.

Natasha Luther-Jones, partner at DLA Piper’’s Leeds office, says: ““The Yorkshire region is a leading area for energy from waste projects, with many local authorities in the region procuring EfW plants.

“These projects not only produce a green source of energy, they also reduce the amount we send to landfill and the heavy taxes now associated with landfill.””
