Sheffield City Region 2012: LEP makes flying start

THE Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership is already attracting a reputation for its ability to attract inward investment.

A recent league table ranking the UK’s 39 LEPs for foreign direct investment saw the Sheffield City Region placed fifth.

The ranking is seen as recognition of the way the area has responded positively to the change triggered by the Government’s decision to scrap regional development agencies and hand the private sector a bigger role in regional economic development through LEPs.

LEP chairman James Newman said: “Sheffield City Region has a very compelling offer to foreign investors.

“Our recently established inward investment team is working hard to capitalise on the strength of this offer.”

The progress the LEP has made just two years into operation is reviewed in Sheffield City Region 2012 – Strong foundations for growth, a new supplement from TheBusinessDesk.com in partnership with Barclays and Sheffield Hallam University.

One of the LEP’s major achievements has been the creation of an enterprise zone offering range of incentives including capital allowances.

John Sutcliffe, finance director at Henry Boot which owns the Markham Vale scheme in the enterprise zone, said: “We are after those people who know they need to move, or a European business that needs a UK base and needs high quality, highly skilled engineers.

“Sheffield is one of the first places they should be looking.”
