Administrators make fresh Comet cuts

ADMINISTRATORS have made a further 58 Yorkshire staff at electronics retailer Comet redundant.

The losses are among 735 jobs to go as administrators from Deloitte continue to hunt for a buyer for the business.

In the latest round of redundancies, 17 staff from the company’s Hull office lost their jobs while 41 have been cut from the Leeds operation of the company’s home delivery network.

Joint administrator Chris Farrington said: “Discussions continue to take place with parties who have expressed interest in parts of the business.

“However, it is unfortunately necessary to begin a store closure programme and to scale back the company’s support functions. While we will continue to do all we can to preserve jobs, we are working hard to put in place comprehensive support to help those employees who are made redundant during the administration.”

The administrators have already put 41 stores on notice they may have to close between now and the end of November if a buyer cannot be found.

A closing down sale has begun in 27 stores with bigger discounts on offer across all shops starting tomorrow.
