Interserve in leisure deal

BUILDING and maintenance company Interserve today said it had won a £44m contract to build and operate two leisure centres in Yorkshire.
The contract will see the centres built at Armley and Morley in Leeds on behalf of Leeds City Council.
Interserve said the deal was the first non-education government Private Finance Initiative contract in the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.
Construction on the sites will begin immediately and both centres are due to open in the summer of 2010, Interserve said.
The company, which cleans Britain’s courts, also said today a strong market for its services in the Middle East left it well placed for further growth, as it posted a 19.5% rise in first-half pre-tax profits to £33.7m. Rrevenue jumped 6.1% to £914m.
Interserve, based in Reading, made 30% of its first-half profit in the Middle East, where it is building a 5km camel race track consisting of a specially graded sand running surface.
