Developers team up for Terry’s factory site deal

TWO property companies have teamed up to buy The Chocolate Works – the former Terry’s chocolate factory.
The 27 acre site on Bishopthorpe Road in York has been bought for an undisclosed sum by Henry Boot Developments and David Wilson Homes from GHT Developments.
Planning consent for uses including homes, offices, hotels and shops has already been granted.
Up to 200 jobs are expected to be created as it is hoped work could start as soon as the summer.
Paul Newman, of David Wilson Homes, said: “We believe that there is extensive local support for the new homes planned for the site and we intend to keep talking with neighbours as our plans develop.
“We’re tremendously excited about the opportunity to regenerate this deteriorating brownfield site to make it into a vibrant part of the local South Bank community.”
City of York Council leader James Alexander said: “This landmark deal is excellent news for York. It marks the start of a bright new future for The Chocolate Works. The council is committed to providing new homes and helping businesses thrive.”
David Wilson Homes was advised by Rosemary Edwards of Shulmans Solicitors in Leeds and Irwin Mitchell advised Henry Boot Developments.
The Terry’s factory closed in 2005 when production was moved to Europe.
