Multi-million pound investment takes step forward to create largest bagel factory in Europe

NEW York Bakery Co has opened its third new production line at its South Yorkshire factory to create the largest bagel factory in Europe.

In 2011, an infrastructural investment of £11.5m was made to extend the existing Rotherham factory, increasing capacity at the bakery and securing jobs in the South Yorkshire area for the long term.

Now, the firm has announced it has opened another line, it will create one of the largest bagel factories globally as well as the largest in Europe.

The infrastructural investment is alongside a £3m communications spend from Maple Leaf Bakery UK.

The investment comes after New York Bakery Co bagel saw sales increase by 30% in Q1.

It is expected strong growth is still to come by investing heavily in future production and people.

Cliff Irwin, managing director of Maple Leaf Bakery UK, owners of the New York Bakery Co, said: “Our strong performance is the product of the market’s growing demand for bagels, the quality and authenticity of our product and our carefully planned re-launch earlier this year.

“We are excited about increasing our sales in the UK market and are confident in our expansion plans.

“The significant backing by Maple Leaf Foods will enable us to move forward with our ambitious expansion plans in the next five to ten years.

“As a result we can now increase our capacity at our Rotherham site to meet growing consumer demand and support our growth aspirations as the market leader in specialty bagels.”

The firm said plans to expand the business and increase its presence in the UK will further strengthen the brand’s category leadership – growing the bagel market as a whole with ambitious targets to double UK household penetration in the next five years.
