Lord Hesletine and Professor Brian Cox round off today’s YIBC

Lord Heseltine has been nicknamed Tarzan, due to his mane of blonde hair, and as he took to the stage this afternoon, he was keen to tell Yorkshire business leaders his opinions on helping create economic wealth.
The former Tory Deputy Prime Minister, who published his report, No Stone Unturned, last autumn, is calling for Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) to be given control over funds currently administered by Westminster. He revealed his views at today’s YIBC 2013.
He said he believes businesses should do a SWAT analysis. “Look at your strengths and also what you could build on,” Lord Hesletine said.
“Leadership also needs to be defined. In our present local government and LEP structure the leadership is not identified in the public mind. I believe that is a mistake. The LEPs have got to put themselves in the position where there is a management structure where they can deliver and rise above.
“I also believe think the race involving money must be competitive. There will be winners and losers. That’s how we get the best possible results over how Government money is spent and then you can add to it from money the local government has got available.”
During today’s YIBC, Professor Brian Cox closed the show with his intriguing stories about the universe and the most recent scientific discoveries, one being of the exciting discovery of a star, four light years away with another earth-sized planet in orbit around it. Apparently it would take 100 years to get there.
Speaking at the event he said: “I enjoy just playing a part in making science more engaging. I think it is the future of our economy and a great thing. If you want an exciting career that takes you around the world, science will do this.”
KC’s business and consumer director, Gary Young, said: “What a great way to bring Humber Business week to a successful close. For me, it has been all about showcasing the very best the region has to offer.
“Thousands of people have been to 50 events throughout the week and they care passionately about the region. All week there have been opportunities for both business and individuals. There has been opportunity to share best practice and learn from the experts.”
KC was YIBC 2013’s lead sponsor.
