Adler & Allan acquires cross-Pennine competitor

YORKSHIRE-BASED Adler & Allan has bought a Cumbrian environmental consultancy, which offers customers a 24/7 spill response service after accidents and incidents involving chemicals.

The Harrogate headquartered oil and environmental services group has acquired AMW Contractors, a £1.4m turnover company based at Wigton near Carlisle.

AMW Contractors has close links with its new owner as both firms worked on the Buncefield disaster clean-up in 2005/6.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. The sale process of was led by Benchmark International Brokers, which is based in Bolton.

AMW was founded in 1990 by Mark Walker. It has a full-time staff of 11 and hires-in sub-contractors on a project-by-project basis.

Its Carlisle depot will become A&A’s northern contaminated land centre of excellence.

Mark Calvert, managing director of the Adler & Allan Group said: “We have worked with Mark and his team at AMW for many years and we know their strengths.

“There are many synergies between the two companies and they have an excellent reputation. This is a very exciting opportunity to strengthen our regional presence and we welcome their team on board.”

Benchmark International was mandated by AMW’s shareholders to sell the business, and marketed it for five months. Adler and Allan was identified as a strong candidate by the vendors early in the process.

Adler and Allan, which is backed by venture capital firm Spirit Capital, has operations nationwide and is backed by private equity firm Spirit Capital. In the year to the end of September its turnover rose from £40.2m to £44.6m.

Adler & Allan offers a wide range of services including emergency response to oil spills and hazardous waste disposal.
