Hiscox to unveil £19m city office plans

INSURANCE company Hiscox is to reveal its proposals for a new purpose built office in York, representing a £19m investment in the city.

The office in the Hungate area will be Hiscox’s largest in the UK outside of London and will employ up to 500 people, offering a range of roles including insurance experts, underwriters, IT, HR, claims and legal advisors and other operational roles.

Hiscox has already begun investing in the city, having already moved into temporary offices at Mallard House.

It says the £19m investment will regenerate and enhance the area, and provide new public open space as well as pedestrian and cycle routes, linking the River Foss with the city centre and York Minster.

A two-day public consultation event has been arranged to give the community a chance to view the plans, speak with members of the team and provide feedback on the proposal.

The draft proposals will be displayed at The Guildhall, St Helen’s Square, York on Thursday July 18, between 2pm and 8pm, and Friday July 19 between 10am and 3pm.

Steve Langan, managing director for Hiscox UK & Ireland, said: “We are hugely excited about our new office development in York. This is a significant investment for us, which will see up to 500 professional jobs come to the city.

“We looked throughout the UK for a new location, but were swayed by York’s unique combination of excellent infrastructure, well educated workforce and quality of life.”

The site can be found behind The Black Swan pub at Peasholme Green, formerly the Ambulance Station building and currently being used as Haymarket car park.
