HARROGATE-BASED GSSArchitecture has carried out a £10m restoration and refurbishment of historic buildings at Durham University’s Palace Green Library which are home to a new exhibition of the Lindisfarne Gospels.

The Gospels are on display in the library from July 1 to September 30 and the St. Cuthbert Gospel – Europe’s oldest surviving bound book – is exhibited alongside the Lindisfarne Gospels, together with other medieval treasures, at the Durham UNESCO World Heritage Site where it was originally discovered 900 years ago within the Saint’s coffin.

The British Library has strict environmental requirements for the display of its national treasures and meeting these targets was fundamental to the university’s bid to display the Gospels. To ensure stable and safe environmental conditions are maintained, innovative technology has been used in the refurbishment of the historic library buildings.
