Scheme set to encourage construction growth

AN initiative with the aim of encouraging construction growth in Yorkshire and the Humber is being launched.
The new group – BIM4SME – is made up individuals from SMEs that can offer support to other SMEs in understanding both the opportunity and the need to engage with Building Information Modelling (BIM) in order to continue constructing buildings across Yorkshire and Humber.
BIM4SMEs was established earlier this year after the government made the use of BIM in any public sector construction projects mandatory from 2016 onwards. The process of BIM involves generating and managing 3D data on a building, including the scope of works needed.
A launch event will take place in Sheffield next month.
Tim Platts, chair of BIM4SME, said: “I’m looking forward to explaining more about BIM4SMEs to Yorkshire and Humber-based firms and how we can help support them. For many which have started using BIM technology, this may mean developing their understanding and providing access to networks; for those that have yet to begin, then the aim will be to provide an awareness and appreciation of BIM, and an understanding of why it is so important.”
