Salitas takes international stand

A FORMER Yorkshire university spin-out is set to showcase its innovative range of lifting and support systems at the world’s largest healthcare technologies trade fair.
Knaresborough-based company Salitas – which started life as a spin-out from the University of Bradford – will showcase its products at MEDICA 2008 which takes place in Germany next month.
The Salitas range has been designed to reduce serious back pain problems in healthcare professionals, and includes the firms core product the Bradford Sling, which is currently being widely used in many UK hospitals across both the NHS.
Salitas has also designed the Leg Support System and the Salitas Plaster Room Suspension System to aid patient comfort and make the working practices of staff easier.
Developed in conjunction with the University of Bradford’s School of Health Studies, the Leg Support System mechanically lifts and supports the patient’s leg; allowing the medical professional to safely carry out a variety of clinical procedures.
In addition it allows for the maintenance of hip movement while reducing the risk of hyperextension at the knee joint, pressure sores on the heel and DVT.
The Salitas Plaster Room Suspension System also reduces the risk of back injuries to the person carrying out the manual handling procedure and at the same time minimises the possibility of causing any unnecessary pain to the patient.
The company is also working with a number of commercial manufacturers, design engineers and academic institutions to take a range of products from various stages of development right through to full commercialisation.
Managing director Richard Wilson said: “MEDICA is a fantastic international platform for us to showcase our range of innovative products and we are hoping to use this opportunity to source new distributors across Europe. In the UK manual handling accidents account for 40% of all sickness absence within the NHS and one in four nurses has taken time off because of a back injury.
“These statistics speak for themselves and this is why we believe it is so important to have a range of products that can make the daily working lives of healthcare professionals easier.”
