New six-storey city centre office block goes to Plans Panel

COUNCILLORS will later today consider the planning application for a new 93,240 sq ft building at Sovereign Square, Leeds.

The plot represents the next phase in the regeneration of the former Queen’s Hall site, which was demolished in 1989. The joint developers, Bruntwood and Kier Property who submitted the application in April, are seeking permission for a six-storey, BREEAM Excellent office building on the corner of Swinegate and Sovereign Street.

Across from the 3 Sovereign Square site, construction works are due to complete on the new regional office for KPMG at No. 1 Sovereign Square this summer. The professional services firm will move to its new 61,000 sq ft building towards the end of 2015.

New green space will sit at the heart of this new development and it is expected Leeds City Council will appoint contractors imminently to begin works to the square. A further plot on the site is ear-marked by the council for future development and proposals for this site will be considered in the future.

Craig Burrow, director at Bruntwood, said: “Despite the tough economic conditions, Bruntwood and Kier have been working closely with Leeds City Council over the past couple of years to bring this development forward. We have definitely seen demand within the market place increase and feel now is the right time to be delivering this high quality scheme at 3 Sovereign Square.

“Sovereign Square sits within an established business district with high calibre neighbouring occupiers including: KPMG, BT, Addleshaw Goddard, Walt Disney, Aon, Direct Line Group, Ernst & Young, and DWF. Subject to the planning consent, we are really excited to be working on a project that will be so transformational to this area of the city centre.”

Tom Gilman of Kier Property added: “We are delighted to be working with Bruntwood on this significant development and with the Council who have demonstrated a pro-active approach to the project, which will deliver a scheme in the regeneration of this core part of the city.”
