Charity challenge creeps closer

THIS year’s Leeds 10K Corporate Challenge is almost here.

Next Sunday, July 20, more than 30 teams of runners from company’s across Yorkshire will line up for this summer’s race.

For the eight successive year, the Corporate Challenge event is being sponsored by law firm Clarion.

Talk Straight and its specialist division, Schools Broadband, is an internet services provider and telecoms specialist based in Ilkley. The business is entering a corporate team for the first time.

The firm has a team of 13 runners, all of whom will be raising money for Childnet, which works with children and young people as well as parents, carers, teachers and professionals and develops resources for them to use to promote safer internet use.

McCarthy’s Removals and Storage has also entered a team.

Managing director Mike McCarthy said: “A team from McCarthy’s took place in the Leeds 10K Clarion Corporate Challenge in 2012 and we really enjoyed it – it was a good way to get fit and healthy and for us to work together as a team on a common goal, outside of the work environment.

“This year the team has really been training hard – in fact I’ve been amazed at all the salad eating and lunchtime running sessions there’s been going on. Stephanie McGowan, our senior move coordinator is our team captain and she’s really rallying the troops. Eight people are taking place this year, and they are from all across the business – from both our Leeds and Harrogate Self Storage teams, from the removals office, from the records management side of things and also from our Business Centre. Perhaps ironically none of our extremely physically fit removal team members have signed up – but they have promised to sponsor us all. Everyone’s set themselves their own time target and jointly we’ve also set a target to exceed the £1,600 raised two years ago.

“This year we’re raising money for Sue Ryder and the Wheatfields Hospice. One of our colleagues, Stuart Wood, sadly passed away there in 2011, so we’ll all be doing this in memory of him and other friends and family we’ve known who have needed the valuable services they offer.”
