Tourism: Events used to create positive outcomes for businesses

EVENTS provide a formula that if effectively mixed can result in considerable positive outcomes for businesses, according to an academic expert, who says they are becoming an increasingly popular approach by organisations of all shapes and sizes to achieve their objectives.

This week, TheBusinessDesk.com, in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University and law firm Walker Morris, has published its Yorkshire Tourism supplement, looking at the huge opportunities events and tourism can bring for the local economy.

Phil Crowther is the principal lecturer in events at Sheffield Hallam University. He said that the substantial audiences and participants are the most obvious and immediate beneficiaries of events, but the outcomes stretch well beyond the enjoyment of attendees.

The wide ranging funders, sponsors, and partners of events all have objectives that make their investment justifiable, he said.

Crowther said: “The world is littered with renowned events success, but there are also relative disasters. Events are far from a silver bullet but they do provide a formula that if effectively mixed can result in considerable positive outcomes that far outweigh the financial investment – vast media coverage, tourist bed nights, significant spend in the local economy, short and longer term employment and so forth.

“We’re helping to lift the region’s ability to deliver successful events time and again, and have created an Event Management Hub that brings together the regional event community to help people learn from one another, share experiences and network with our academics. This is accompanied by workshops and CPD opportunities to help people unlock the strategic potential of events as well as more tactical tips and advice.”

Turning to the Grand Départ event, Peter Considine, finance partner at Walker Morris said that for Yorkshire, hosting the Grand Départ has left a legacy that will go far beyond 2014. For more business comment looking at the legacy of the event, click here.

“The benefits to tourism and to cycling are clear, but we see significant benefits for the wider business community too. When people look at the organisation, delivery, energy and enthusiasm behind the Grand Départ, they will see that Yorkshire is a fantastic place to get things done,” Considine said.

“If Le Tour’s visit to Yorkshire encourages businesses from other countries to
look beyond London and the South East when they are considering investment in the UK then its legacy will be a very positive one for the whole region.”
