Collaboration set to save Yorkshire bacon

A GROUP of farmers in East Yorkshire have joined forces to launch a new brand of fully traceable sausage and bacon which has been produced in the area.
The farmers behind the new venture – Yorkshire Outdoor – are committed to rearing outdoor pork in welfare friendly conditions.
Breeds are chosen for flavour, and fed on a diet of high quality, fully traceable feed, sourced from Yorkshire.
The brand has won its first contract with Yorkshire supermarket chain Asda which is selling the brand as part of a local sourcing campaign.
Mark and Grant Burton of Wilberfoss are part of the team behind Yorkshire Outdoor.
Mark Burton said: “Our main point of difference from our competitors is full traceability. All of our meat comes directly from our farm using the finest outdoor reared breeds. Much of the bacon sold in supermarkets as British, may only have only been cured and packaged in the UK from foreign pork. We make our sausages and cure our bacon in a newly built factory just 20 miles from where the pigs are reared. We even use feed sourced from Yorkshire to reduce food miles and boost the local farming economy.
“When you buy our sausages and bacon, you can rest easy that the animals have felt the sun on their backs and got their snouts stuck into a good bit of Yorkshire soil.”
The launch of Yorkshire Outdoor coincides with a new campaign by celebrity chef Jamie Oliver called Jamie Saves Our Bacon.
A 90-minute programme broadcast later this month will see the chef attempting to get viewers to buy British pork as part of a campaign to save the British pig industry.
